Taste of Taiwan Cupping Session – Hobart

Asa Brew first cupping session in here! We will be visiting the Taiwan International Coffee Expo 2023 with exciting international championships including latte art, coffee spirits and coffee roasting! We thought why not share some fun with the Hobart community and here we are, hosting our first community cupping session with beans roasted in Taiwan! If you’ve always wanted to try out some roasters from Taiwan, this is your chance! Only 25 spots available, grab yours now! If there’s enough interest, we can organise a group buy and help you save some shipping cost too!

  • What to bring:
    Nothing! We’ll provide beans, cups and spoons for you. But feel free to bring your favourite cupping spoon or cups!
  • Why the $15 cost:
    As much as we hate it, but we have to charge $15 pp for the cupping event to cover the cost for the beans. At the end of the event, each attendees will also receive a bag of 30g (or more) of the beans of your choice.
  • Potential roasters that we’ll be cupping, this may change due to availability, but there will be at least 8 coffee beans and more to cup, this list will be updated accordingly:
    • OKLao Specialty Coffee
      In 2006, OKLao Coffee Company was established in Laos. Starting from just supplying green beans, OKLao has then set up a local farm in Laos. In 2009, they then set up their first store in Taichung Taiwan. OKLao does not only supply directly from their own farm, they also supply beans from other farms around the world and participating in world auction for the best beans on the market. They are also actively cultivate talented baristas, and won the runner-up of the 2018 World Cup Siphon Coffee Competition(WSC).
    • Simple Kaffa
      Founded by 2016 World Barista Champion Berg Wu, he also took third place at the Taiwan Barista Championship in 2012 and won first place in three consecutive years from 2013 to 2015. In 2016, Berg became the first Taiwanese to win The World Barista Championship. He started brewing coffee back in 2000 as a student wanted to save some money. Berg then decided to buy a tricycle and started selling coffee on the streets. In 2011, three years after Berg began his involvement in the Taiwan Barista Championship and continued to sell coffee from his coffee tricycle while working as an engineer, he decided to venture into entrepreneurship and opened his own shop.
    • VWI by Chadwang
      Founded by 2017 World Brewers Cup Champion Chad Wang. VWI represents the 3 forms of water: V=Vapour, W=Water and I=ICE, Chad Wang believes that the water is the most important part of making a cup of good coffee, he believes when it comes to drip coffee, coffee only take part of 1.5%, while the water is 98.5%.
    • Bean Barn
      Owner Addie started making coffee as a barista while he’s on working holiday in Australia and fall in love with the Australia coffee culture. After returning to Taiwan and gaining more experience as a barista, Addie decided to take the next step into coffee roasting. After gaining years of coffee roasting experience in one of the biggest roastery in Taiwan, he then decided to set up his own café and roaster.
    • Secret Kasasagi Coffee Roaster
      Nestled within the bustling streets of Taipei, this artisanal coffee shop can only be visited by appointment. They offer their own freshly roasted coffee, as well as homemade toast, jams, and desserts. The coffee beans are carefully selected in three phases: before roasting, after roasting, and prior to packaging. They meticulously ensure that the taste and quality meet their high standards by conducting extensive cupping sessions after the beans are roasted and before they are packaged.
    • Sherry Selection
      2022 WBrC Champion Sherry has released a limited filter blend and some single origin beans that’ll be available during the coffee expo! Limited quantity with sweet price. Using colour combination as a starting point, Sherry’s aim is to offer a diverse and abundant spectrum of flavour intensities experienced at elevated, moderate, and reduced temperatures. It’s akin to witnessing a vivid rainbow.
    • Alluring Scent Coffee Estate
      Alluring Scent Coffee Estate is a local coffee farm located in a valley at Alishan, a mountain indigenous township in Chiayi County. In 2019 they were awarded the Alishan Estate Coffee Elites Gold Award in the washed coffee bean category, the 2018 Gold Award in the natural category of the same event; 2018 Silver Award in Taiwan Premium Coffee Awards, 2016 Gold Award in the category of Processing of the same event.
    • Oasis Coffee Roaster
      Founded by Yu Ta Chu in 2018, wished the store would become an oasis in the city. Before becoming a roaster, Yu-ta was involved in film production as a visual artist. It was an encounter with specialty coffee that made him enter a different industry. Back in the days when specialty coffee is not as popular, Yu Ya Chu took advantage of his experience in film production, created an original videos on his YouTube channel and Instagram, using beautiful images and animation to express his knowledge, how to brew and how to roast. Yu Ta Chu also won 4th place in 2022 TBrC and 2nd place in 2023 TBrC.
